The Wish Giver

This book is actually one I have vague recollections of from my childhood. It epitomizes the saying, "Be careful what you wish for...it just may come true."

The story takes place in a little town around the time of a county fair. There is a man at the fair selling wish cards for 50 cents. Only 4 people take him up on his far-fetched promises. Then the story goes on to chronicle exactly what happens to three of those people as they make their wishes. Many of their stories are quite comical, but also shocking as their wishes go so awry. Just FYI...one of them is about a boy/girl relationship so be ready for that if you have any concerns. That particular one ends up quite well when the girl who thought this certain boy was so marvelous ends up finding out how he was just trying to get money out of her family by acting sweet on her.

This definitely is not a high character building story...one more just for fun and challenges you to think about the things you really would wish for. You may prefer doing it for a read-aloud rather than just handing it to your child, but be ready to keep reading for a while as everyone will want to know how the story ends up. Also, I'd skip reading the first page as it had a bit too much magic talk for my taste.
